About us

History

The history of the Community of St. Stephen is rich and deeply rooted in the social and religious fabric of Old Delhi, India. Founded in the year 1886 by Mrs. Pricilla Winters, wife of Reverend Winters, the community emerged as a beacon of faith and service in a time when societal norms restricted the participation of women in public life.
Located strategically behind the Tis Hazari metro station in Old Delhi, the St. Stephen Community was established within the premises of the Church of North India. Mrs. Pricilla Winters, along with other dedicated sisters, embarked on a mission to break through the barriers imposed by the purdah system, which segregated women from the outside world. Their mission was to reach out to women who were confined within the walls of their homes and empower them with the light of knowledge and the gift of healthcare.

Through their prayers, untiring efforts, and exemplary services, the members of the St. Stephen Community laid the foundation for several institutions that continue to serve the community to this day. Foremost among these institutions is the St. Stephen Hospital, which stands as a testament to their commitment to providing quality healthcare to all, regardless of social status or background.

In addition to the hospital, the community’s efforts led to the establishment of educational institutions such as Victoria Girls’ School, Queen Mary’s School, St. Thomas School, St. Michael School, and St. Mary’s Home. These schools became centers of learning and empowerment, offering opportunities for girls and young women to receive a quality education and break free from the constraints of traditional gender roles.

Over the decades, the Community of St. Stephen has continued to uphold its founding principles of devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ and service to others. Through their unwavering dedication and selfless commitment, they have transformed countless lives and left an indelible mark on the landscape of Old Delhi, inspiring generations to come.

Our approach

We extend a compassionate hand to those in need through a range of services aimed at nurturing both the spirit and the practical needs of our community members.

Our offerings include prayer support, providing a comforting presence and spiritual guidance during times of difficulty. Additionally, we offer counseling services, providing a safe space for individuals to share their burdens and receive guidance on their journey towards healing and wholeness.

Hospitality is at the heart of our mission, offering warmth and welcome to all who enter our doors. Finally, recognizing the importance of education in breaking cycles of poverty, we provide financial assistance to economically disadvantaged children, ensuring they have access to the tools they need to build a brighter future, as well as supporting needy widows in their time of need, offering both financial assistance and emotional support.
